Pope Leo XIV used an address to artists Friday to draw a line between human art and AI. Speaking to artists and curators gathered in the Vatican’s Consistory Hall for “The Art of Possibility: Weaving Together,” the pope said, “There is an ontological difference—even before an aesthetic one—between art and what a machine can generate.”

The word ontological refers to what a thing is, where aesthetic refers to how it looks or sounds. Leo is arguing the difference is one of kind, not polish. A machine can produce something that looks finished and still, in his telling, be a different sort of object than a painting, a song or a poem made by a person.

“Algorithms lack the spark of the human, whereas authentic culture and art preserve this spark,” he said.

The pope also made a direct request of the room. “The Church needs you,” he told the artists and curators. “This is especially true in this age of artificial intelligence.”

“Art nurtures the fundamental posture of listening,” he said, “through which we can learn about humanity’s aspirations and wounds.”

For Leo, the threat isn’t only that machines can imitate the finished product. It’s that a culture built around instantaneous answers can flatten the attention art requires.

The remarks land in the middle of an argument musicians, illustrators and filmmakers are already having about AI-generated work: what separates something made from something generated.

Leo ended with an offer. “The Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions,” he said, “an alliance for safeguarding what is human.”
